Top Somerset County baseball, softball, tennis, track and field performers for April 7-13 (2025)

It was a good day on the baseball and softball diamond for four Somerset County teams, Wednesday. Windber track and Somerset tennis recorded wins as well. Meyersdale softball earned a victory over Windber, Tuesday. The Windber baseball and softball teams collected wins on Monday.

Athlete of the Week

Somerset baseball player Colt Hagans was voted Daily American Somerset County Male Athlete of the Week while North Star softball player Morgan Snyder was selected Female Athlete of the Week for their efforts March 31 to April 5.

Hagans hit two home runs and drove in five runs in a win over Clearfield. He allowed one run on one hit and a walk. Meanwhile, Snyder had four hits and six RBIs in a win over Blacklick Valley.

Baseball

Gene Schultz Memorial Tournament

Bishop McCort 7, Conemaugh Township 5 (10): Johnathan Delia hit a 2-run walk-off homer to lift the Crushers to the tournament title.

Saturday

Track and field

Bedford SAC Energy Invitational: The Somerset girls finished third overall while the boys took fourth.

Somerset's Kamryn Ross was named Outstanding Sprinter for the girls. She won the 100- and 200-meter dash as well as the 400. Emily Fisher won the 800 and finished second in the 1600 and 3200. Eve Housley finished third on the 100 hurdles.

Alex Smith won the 100 meters and Carson Sanner took second. Trae Bhullar won the javelin competition and finished second in the triple jump. Carter Dunmyer took second in the long jump. The 400-relay team of Dunmyer, Sanner, Smith and Evan DiBuono claimed second.

Wednesday

Baseball

Somerset 11, Penns Valley 1 (5): Zane Hagans drove in three runs to guide the Golden Eagles past the Rams.

Kahne Foltz and Braeden Flower each had two RBIs for Somerset. Garrett Reese struck out five over four innings.

Shanksville-Shade 12, Turkeyfoot Valley 2 (6): Grant Boozer struck out 13 to lead the Panthers past the Rams.

Boozer helped his cause with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Jordan Young, Matt Miller and Braxton Faidley each had three hits. Faidley drove in four runs.

Zack Ryan tallied two hits, an RBI and a run for Turkeyfoot.

Softball

Shade-Shanksville 10, Turkeyfoot Valley 0 (5): Tori Bowers tallied two hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs to help the Panthers past the Rams.

Payton Maddy and Hayden Sheeler each had two hits and two RBIs for Shade. Jaedyn Krupper added two hits, reaching 75 for her career. Maddy allowed two hits and struck out nine.

Meyersdale 12, North Star 2 (5): Madison Berkley recorded two hits and two RBIs while Jessica Daughton added two RBIs to propel the Red Raiders past the Cougars.

Kendell Donaldson provided two hits and an RBI while Sarah Hainsworth contributed two hits for Meyersdale.

Kayley Brant led North Star with three hits, and Morgan Snyder delivered a hit and two RBIs.

Northern Garrett 2, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: Elsie Barna and Coral Prosser had the lone hits for the Mountaineers in a non-conference setback.

Elena Ritchey allowed two unearned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out eight for Berlin.

Tennis

Somerset 5, Bishop McCort 0: Josiah Antram, Declan Egal and Kai Petrosky picked up singles wins in a sweep of the Crushers.

Evan Walter and Isaac St. Clair along with the team of Dom Gardner and Ben Bowers were victorious in doubles.

Track and field

Windber notches 4 wins: The Windber boys bested Bishop McCort Catholic Academy 100-37, and Shade 115-22.

Jonas Krause (400 meters, high jump, triple jump) Michael Dusack (1600, 3200), Kaleb Grant (110 hurdles), Andrew Minahan (300 hurdles), Dominick Chippie (pole vault, javelin), Grady Klosky (long jump), Eddie Richards (shot put), Roman Weyandt (discus) earned individual wins for Windber.

The Windber girls topped Bishop McCort 139-8, and Shade 141-5.

Autumn Walz (100-meter dash), Camryn Brady (200, 400), Lillian Grillo (800), Rachel Russo (1600, 3200), Alayna Shuster (100, 300 hurdles), Mayson Edwards (high jump), Pacey Oyler (pole vault), Heather Carney (long jump, triple jump), Lily Bifano (shot put, discus), and Sadie Pallo (javelin) picked up wins for the Ramblers.

Meyersdale 15, Windber 7: Sarah Hainsworth tallied two hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Red Raiders over the Ramblers.

Amber Long, Isabella Sleasman and Keira Eberly each drove in three runs while Kendell Donaldson added three hits and three runs for Meyersdale.

Baseball

Windber 9, Penn Cambria 7: Lucas Oleksa went 4-for-4, including a double, RBI and three runs scored to vault the Ramblers over the Panthers.

Lucas Rummel, Dalton Strick and Mason Horner all tallied a hit and a run scored for Windber. Logan Serenko allowed two hits and struck out six in 5⅓.

Softball

Windber 8, Penn Cambria 5: Summer Campbell tallied two hits, including a triple and three RBIs to lift the Ramblers over the Panthers.

Angel James contributed two hits, including a home run and two runs scored. Rylee Baer doubled, tripled and drove in two runs while Maggie Manippo added a triple and two runs.

Heritage All-Conference Team

Conemaugh Township's Colin Dinyar was selected to the Heritage Conference boys basketball team while Ava Byer was named to the girls team. Conemaugh Township's Landon Huffman and Carter Christ were named to the all-conference wrestling team.

UPJ adds 3 athletic programs

The University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown announced the addition of three new athletic programs on Monday.

Women's wrestling, along with men's and women's swimming were added. Forest Hills graduate and UPJ national champion wrestler Shane Valko will lead the women's program.
