Les métaphores animales dont regorge la pièce de J. M. Synge, The Playboy of the Western World, expriment avec force le caractère anxiogène de la modernité coloniale irlandaise. Cet article se propose de lire ces métaphores comme autant de marqueurs de cette (pré)modernité. La gestuelle quasi-animale que requiert la mise en scène est symptomatique d’une résistance à une conception hégémonique de la modernité de l’Irlande edwardienne. Sur la scène des années 1900 émerge un corps irlandais moderne, docile et performant. A la même époque survivent encore les vestiges d’une corporalité radicalement différente, associée aux traditions et rituels du monde rural, tels, par exemple, les guerres de clans (« faction fights ») ou les lamentations (« keening »). Ce sont ces autres formes d’expressions corporelles – moins transparentes et plus bestiales - qui intéressent Synge plus particulièrement et qui laissent dans ses pièces les traces d’une alternative à la modernité du théâtre institutionnel (de l’Abbaye).
