When should my 2 year old eat breakfast?

The answer to this question largely depends on your daily routine.

If you don’t have an established routine for your toddler, check out one of our most popular posts: My 2 Year Old’s Daily Routine.

My best advice is to try and serve breakfast at the same time every day. This helps establish a feeding schedule and can also help regulate your toddler’s sleep overnight.

For example: If you serve breakfast every morning at 7:30 AM, your 2 year old’s body learns to expect food at this time.

If my toddler is hungry while I’m putting her breakfast together, I usually give her fruit, dry cereal, or an applesauce pouch.

How much should my toddler eat for breakfast? And what if they don’t want to eat?

It’s important to remember that all kids are different. Some toddlers wake up starving, and others would rather play or watch a TV show before eating.

That being said, as a mom, you know your little one needs to eat. And if they don’t eat breakfast, it will be non-stop snacking until lunch.

If your 2 year old is not “big” on breakfast, try serving a “snacky” breakfast plate.

Quick 2 Year Old Breakfast Ideas AKA What Should I Feed My 2 Year Old?

Below you’ll find easy, go-to ideas to answer the question: “What can I make my 2 year old for breakfast?”

1. PB&J Bites, Blueberries, Yogurt Pouch

Quick 2 Year Old Breakfast Ideas (5)
  • PB&J bites: Made on Dave’s Killer bread with Whole Foods 365 Unsweetened Peanut Butter & Whole Foods 365 Organic Jam
  • Yogurt pouch: Served in this reusable pouch (love these) – for these DIY pouches I blend up fa*ge 5% Greek yogurt, strawberries & a little honey (please note: do not serve honey to babies under 1)
  • This is a simple breakfast idea for a picky eater! Substitute with their favorite pouch or yogurt drink.

2. Hard-boiled eggs, Fruit, & Carb (muffin or toast)

  • Hard-boiled eggs: Every Sunday I make a batch of hard-boiled eggs to serve throughout the week. My girls love their eggs sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning!
  • Carb: (On left) Mini Carrot Muffins from The Complete Baby & Toddler Cookbook (On Right) Avocado toast on Dave’s Killer English muffin

3. Pancake Sandwich, Oranges, Smoothie pouch

Quick 2 Year Old Breakfast Ideas (8)
  • Pancake sandwich: My favorite pancake recipe is also in the Baby & Toddler cookbook. I use unsweetened almond butter inside the “sandwich”.
  • Smoothie pouch: Served in this reusable pouch. I don’t usually measure when I make smoothies, but this one had: frozen blueberries, a frozen banana, unsweetened almondmilk, handful of baby spinach, and some hemp hearts (ground flaxseed also works).

4. PB&J Waffles, Blueberries, Breakfast Sausage or Avocado

  • Waffles: Pictured above are Whole Foods 365 Mini Waffles. The PB&J used is also Whole Foods brand. For little ones with peanut allergies, try almond butter or sunflower butter.
  • Protein: (Left) Applegate Farms chicken maple breakfast sausage, (Right) Chopped avocado.
  • This is a healthy breakfast, perfect for a toddler who doesn’t like eggs!

5. Oat Waffles, Blueberries, Mango Yogurt Pouch

Quick 2 Year Old Breakfast Ideas (11)
  • Oat Waffles: The recipe for these is in this cookbook (one of my all-time favorites). I make a double batch on Sunday and freeze some for the week ahead. These are gluten-free, too.
  • Mango Yogurt: As mentioned before, I don’t usually measure when I make these mixtures. This is one is fa*ge 5% Greek yogurt, handful of frozen mango and a little honey (for toddlers 1+). I also like to buy pre-made smoothie pouches from Once Upon a Farm and Stonyfield.

6. Spinach, Egg & Cheese Pita Pockets, Avocado & Fruit

  • Pita Pockets: I use Toufayan Sprouted Wheat pitas. These are sold by the deli section. The eggs are just scrambled eggs, finely shredded spinach, and shredded mild cheddar cheese.
  • Avocado: My kids LOVE avocado and pretty much eat it with every meal. If your toddler is a hard sell, try serving it with a fun food pick, like the bunny one pictured above.

7. Oat Bites, Greek yogurt, Fruit

Quick 2 Year Old Breakfast Ideas (14)
  • Oat Bites: You can find the recipe for these easy, make-ahead banana oatmeal cups, here.
  • Yogurt: I like serving Greek yogurt because it’s thicker and easier for little ones to eat. It’s important to buy Whole Milk (full-fat) yogurt as this is an important healthy fat for babies and toddlers.

8. Mini Waffle Maker Omelets

  • Get the super easy recipe for the waffle omelets, here.
  • Serve with toast, fruit, or a pouch.

Notes:

  • You can easily change up the fruit shown in the above ideas. These breakfasts were all made in the summertime when berries & stone-fruits are everywhere. In the winter, try apples, bananas, oranges, or starfruit.
  • If your toddler is picky when it comes to fruit, try frozen fruit, that way it won’t spoil.
  • Sunday is my meal prep day. This is when I make a double batch of pancakes, waffles, or oat bites to have on hand for the upcoming week.
  • As for the yogurt and smoothie pouches, I also pick a day and fill up all of the pouches. Then I store them in the freezer and defrost as needed. This way they stay fresh & last longer.
  • I don’t always have time to make my own pouches, so I also stock up on Stonyfield Organic yogurt pouches, Siggis yogurt pouches and GoGo Squeez applesauce pouches.
