John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse • Custom Projects Series • Projects by Franz Safford as Principal in ChargeA valued collaboration with the office of achieved a significant milestone in innovative facades: a glazed stressed steel shell structure that achieved a 100’ clear span with a 10” structural depth. The geometry of the facade is an inverted, irregular cone which manipulated the surface geometry to parallel vertical lines (usually the vertical lines on a cone converge). The shell structure was pre-fabricated into 10’ x 100’ ladder frames and the crossing stainless steel rods were pre-tensioned prior to lifting. Due to the captured energy of the prestressed rods, stiffening “spine” trusses were used to lift the shell sections into position and stabilize them until they were welded together to achieve the required shell action. A unique endeavor that required innovative solutions and meticulous planning.Our Contribution: Our team was entrusted with the design, inspection, and structural certifications for the steel and timber roof, floor, and wall framing. Out in the suburbs of Melbourne inspecting cracked footings, precast walls and grout beds...Existing built assets require ongoing maintenance and assessment to ensure they perform appropriately and remain safe for their users and occupiers.This is an example of a circa 10 m high precast concrete acoustic wall.You may find these next to freeways to block noise to adjacent housing developments.Precast concrete can be an efficient and safe form of construction which can reduce wastage and increase quality.However successful implementation depends upon careful detailing, design and execution.We are undertaking a forensic engineering assessment on damage at multiple locations over a 1 kilometer stretch of acoustic wall where something has clearly gone wrong at multiple locations.Stay tuned for more...#structuralengineering #forensicengineering

UK building regulations conundrum: Cavity barriers are required at slabs and around openings, yet there's a lack of limits on the dimensions of spandrel area between the openings. This situation allows architects to opt for wall-to-wall windows, which minimises the room available for any barrier, especially when the space needed for cladding brackets is taken into account. Much time is consumed in preparing engineering statements that often don't lead to clear approvals, leaving the compliance of such designs in the grey area.
