We’ll leave you to decide what you’ll serve with it and just focus on cooking the steak and creating their delicious marinade.

It makes use of coca-cola, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, and red wine vinegar for that massively rich flavor.

The main thing is to secure yourself 2lbs of sirloin steak and cut them into 2-3 inch squares in preparation for marinating and cooking.

Ingredients:

(4 servings)

For the Marinade:

  • 1 cup of ketchup
  • 1/2 cup of Coca-Cola (can also be substituted for water)
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup of A-1 sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp of freshly ground black pepper

For the steak:

  • 2lbs of sirloin streak
  • 1 large onion, cut into thick strips vertically
  • 1 tbsp of butter
  • 1 tbsp of extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp of sugar

Instructions:

It’s probably a good idea to prepare this the night before you want to eat it as we are going to be marinating the steak anywhere from 8 to 24 hours, depending on how tender and flavorful you want the meat to be.

Once the meat is prepped the actual cooking time is fairly quick, freeing you up to cook whichever delicious sides you wish to serve it with!

Step 1:

We’re going to start by preparing the marinade.

Firstly, we need to take a reasonably sized saucepan and place all of the items listed under the marinade section of the ingredient list into the pan.

Step 2:

Bring all of these ingredients up to a boil, being sure to give them a bit of a stir to ensure they are adequately mixed together.

Step 3:

As soon as you can see it boiling, take the heat down and let it continue to simmer for 5 more minutes, then remove it from the heat completely.

Step 4:

Next, we need to cut the steak into roughly 2-3 inch squares.

Be sure to also remove any large pieces of fat and gristle from the meat so it’s predominantly just the steak itself (a little fat is ok though).

Step 5:

Next, take a zip lock bag and put all the beef in, then pour in all of the marinade sauce (make sure it’s cooled off beforehand).

Swill everything around inside the bag to ensure all the steak pieces have been thoroughly coated in the marinade.

We now need to leave this for 8-24 hours.

The simplest way to do this is to prep it at roughly the same time you want to cook it the following day, then by the time you get around to it, it will have been about 24 hours.

Step 6:

Once you are ready to cook the steak, take a medium saute pan and put it over low heat.

Throw in the butter and olive oil and wait for it to come up to temperature.

Step 7:

To this, we add the onions, salt, pepper, and sugar.

Cook for 30-40 minutes being sure to stir and agitate everything occasionally. The onions need to be caramelized but not completely cooked down.

Grilling the steak doesn’t take too long, so you can move on to the next step about 10 minutes before these onions are finished.

Step 8:

Start by draining all the marinade from the beef.

Then get a ribbed grill pan and heat it over high heat (you can also use an outdoor grill for this if you have one).

Step 9:

Lightly grease the pan with cooking spray or olive oil, and grill the sirloin steak tips.

Ensure there is adequate room between each piece so they can cook properly.

They should take about 2-3 minutes to cook per side, but keep an eye on them and ensure they don’t get overcooked.

Once all sides have been cooked it’s done!

Simply pair it together with the caramelized onion mixture and whichever other ingredients you want to serve it with and enjoy!

Ingredients substitutions

IHOP Steak Tips Recipe (2)

There are quite a few ingredients used in this dish, and not all of them are standard in everyone’s pantry.

So here are a few handy ingredient substitutions you can use which might be a little more readily accessible to the average cook.

1. Balsamic vinegar

The best thing about this is most people will already have it at home because it’s commonly used on salad.

It makes a great red wine vinegar replacement for marinades.

You may wish to dilute it a little bit or perhaps pair it with some red wine as it’s a little thicker and sweeter than regular red wine vinegar.

2. Soy sauce

Soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce are pretty similar already, perhaps just with a slightly less vinegary tang.

But the salt content and how it helps the marinade soften the meat is every bit as good!

Simply use it as a 1:1 substitute.

3. Water

Coca-cola is listed as part of the marinade because it’s exceptionally good at breaking down meat and helping it become more tender.

However, if you’ve got a really nice cut of meat and feel confident it’s still going to be soft and juicy when cooked, just do away with the cola completely and replace it with water.

Not only will it make the meal more healthy, but it might also actually turn out better (providing the quality of the meat is good).

What to serve with IHOP Steak Tips

IHOP themselves have a few sides they like to serve their beef tips with, but really there is no rule here.

Rich and delicious meatcan pair well with any kind of fried vegetables, potatoes, or even bread.

Fried Eggs

One of IHOP’s favorite accompaniments to steak tips is fried eggs.

Two eggs, fried sunny side up or scrambled with a little salt that can be used to mop up some of that steak juice and really helps complete the meal.

Mushrooms

Another great side IHOP likes to pair with their steak.

Fresh mushrooms which have been sauteed in butter and garlic add a delicious complimentary flavor.

Plus, the caramelized onions really work well with the mushrooms.

How to reheat IHOP Steak Tips

Low and slow is the name of the game here, as steak can be very prone to drying out and becoming tough to eat.

The long marinating period definitely helps soften the meat, but you can easily undo that by being too aggressive when overheating.

How to reheat IHOP Steak Tips in a pot

Place a teaspoon of butter or oil in the pan and add the steak to it.

Cover with a lid and flip the steak over once every 60 seconds to stop it from cooking too much and drying out.

Repeat this process until it’s adequately warmed through.

How to reheat IHOP Steak Tips in the microwave

Set the microwave to medium and reheat using 30-second intervals.

Once again flipping between each heating cycle really helps prevent it from overcooking.

It shouldn’t take more than 1.5 to 2 minutes to be adequately heated.

How to reheat Ihop Steak Tips in the oven

Preheat the oven to 275°F and cover it with a large baking sheet.

Heat the steak nice and slow for about 30 minutes and it should be warmed through without becoming overcooked.

How to reheat Ihop Steak Tips in an air fryer

We take a slightly different approach here, heat your air fryer to 400°F and cook the steak for about 3 minutes.

This should make the outside fairly crispy without overheating the middle too much.

How to store IHOP Steak Tips

If you’ve made too much you can store some for later.

The key is sealing it nice and tightly so it remains as fresh as possible.

Store in the fridge

Wrap the steak very tightly in foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate.

It should last for 3-4 days, but the sooner you finish it the better its taste will be!

Store in the freezer

Once again wrap the steak fully in wrap or foil, or even a freezer bag works!

It will last for 2-3 months once frozen.
